The Police Force management has not accounted for over sh3.3b meant for officers’ salaries in the last financial year.

By Davis WeddiThe Police Force management has not accounted for over sh3.3b meant for officers’ salaries in the last financial year.The Auditor General’s (AG) report indicates that the funds were advances of sh1.8b to cater for the salaries of Special Police Constables and sh1.4b advanced to various officers in-charge of stations to cater for salaries during the financial year ending June 2001.In his report presented to parliament, the AG said the Police department was still indebted to the tune of over sh99m in salary arrears, some dating to 1994.Over sh81m advanced to various officers to cater for suspects’ food was also not accounted for, contrary to regulations, the report said. It said in an attempt to avoid litigation, the Police accounting officer claims he was forced to misallocate funds in order to purchase 31 cellular phones sets, an expenditure which he overshot by 21 sets. The police is now indebted to a phone company by over sh62m in airtime of which only sh10m has been paid.Ends
