By Elvis BasuddeA good show must leave the person watching feeling satisfied, said one poet. Arturo Uruchurtu, a Mexican citizen and an accomplished piano artist, meets the demands of his audience.“We are grateful to the Mexican government for the cultural exchange they often practice. Arturo has been sent to us as a special favour to entertain people in East Africa. He is a musician of outstanding ability and I hope you will enjoy the piano,” said Manzur Alam, Chairman of Alam Group, as he introduced the pianist.Uruchurtu, a professor of classical music, was happy to share his experience and knowledge at a recital last Saturday evening at the Mexican Consulate, Plot 6 on Kintu Road. The elegant smartly dressed middle aged Uruchurtu leapt onto the stage and began to slide his fingers along the black and white keyboard. For about two hours, Uruchurtu held the audience spellbound as he performed the works of five Mexican celebrated classical music composers of the 18th century. The audience enjoyed the melody from the talking piano.“His performance is fantastic. He is a very accomplished person. And what is even more important is that in Kampala, we hardly ever get to hear a pianist of this repute. We are not often exposed to art of this quality,” said an elderly Mexican who attended the recital.A distinguished student from the National Music Academy of Mexico, Uruchurtu completed a Masters degree at the University of Indiana, in the US.He has received several awards of recognition and has performed as a soloist in diverse chamber of music ensembles in his homeland Mexico, United States, Germany, Austria and Hungary.Uruchurtu has also played with famous composers such as Horacio Franco, Ronald Zolmann, Luis Gioron and Jonathan Cohler among others.Currently, Uruchurtu is a professor at the National Music School of the UNAM and the National Institute of Fine Art, Mexico.
