Counselling is based on the fact that every individual is different and should be treated as such.

Counselling is based on the fact that every individual is different and should be treated as such. The counsellor should therefore treat each case on its individual merit. The counsellor to perform well must have the counselee’s bio - data which may include family background, results of achievement, scholastic ability, personality, vocational interest, hobbies, work experiences, curricular interests and activities, health record, all of which contribute to understanding the client. In practice therefore the counsellor should have records of each client. Out of these records the counsellor can periodically come up with valuable statistics. This could be done according to classes say S1-S6. Then, the sex aspect and age consideration, the number of visits per client over a given period of time should equally be recorded. The problems the clients present may be ranked according to frequency. Among these may be:- Relationships- Depression- Psychological, or emotional- Anxiety- Academic- Bereavement- Transitions- Eating disorders- Victims of abuse- Sexual problems- Physical healthThe statistics derived can be very useful. They can help the school to come up with an agreed position on how to reduce the number of students with specific complaints. These could be in the area of academics, eating disorders or relations with teachers. There are instances where the male teachers are the problem. This is common where male teachers have to teach girls. It is important to give the counsellor a senior position in the school structure. This can enable them to summon members of staff if they are the source of some of the problems which students or pupils present to the counsellor. Ends
