By Catherine NtabaddeGRADUATION ceremonies in Uganda are characterised by long speeches and bureaucracy. However, this was not the case during Lincoln International School Uganda (LISU)’s sixth graduation for its high school students of 2002 recently. The speeches were brief and captivating. The colourful and well-attended ceremony at which 20 LISU students from 15 nations received their certificates and diplomas took place at Sheraton Kampala Hotel. The students had sat for International Baccalaureate exams. The beautiful 46 banners of different countries pinned all over the Rwenzori Ball Room were enough to tell you that LISU was a true international school. The purple banner in the background added beauty to the occasion. The graduands, clad in purple gowns, matched from the back of Rwenzori Ball Room with smiles on their faces and some carrying roses. The guests, who were mainly parents included Dauda Toure, UNDP representative to Uganda, Dr. Ian Clarke, director of International Hospital Kampala, Derek Atkins, project director Milday Centre and Cathy Watson, the director of Straight Talk Foundation.Guests at the LISU graduation clapped and applauded all the graduands.LISU’s headmaster Peter Todd moderated the ceremony. Dr. Clarke who was the guest speaker told the graduands not to rush into full time occupation but to go for further studies.“Your parents want to see you prepared for life in a full manner and are even prepared to pay for it, so my advice to you is to spin it out for as long as possible. After all why work for a living when you can be a student. It really does beat having to earn a living and you will get enough of that in time,” he said. Clarke challenged the graduands to make a difference in the world wherever they will be going.Three of the graduands received LISU awards in various fields. Saranga Nakhooda (India), daughter of Rashmi Nakhooda, LISU’s spokesperson received a valedatorian award for scoring the highest points.Ahn Myungsun who was the second best received the salutatorian award.Myungsun also received a bilingual award. Jenny Farmer (UK) received the creativity action service award. Mr. Mogens Mechta, LISU’s chairman board of directors handed over the diplomas and certificates to the graduands. LISU choir played musical instruments to crown the ceremony.Ends
