THE Electoral Commission has set July 9 and 10 as nomination dates for candidates who will contest for the district council chairperson of the troubled Kibaale district, reports Edris Kisambira.A statement by commission chairman Hajji Aziz Kasujja said the nomination would be conducted at the district headquarters beginning at 10:00am and would end at 5:00pm on each day.Kibaale district was thrown into a tense tribal clash following the election into office of Fred Ahaibwe Ruremera, a Mukiga, in a predominantly Banyoro area. He later stepped down from office following President Yoweri Museveni’s intervention.In a June 21 letter to the Kibaale district council speaker, Ruremera said, “In cognisance and desire to promote development, peace and harmony in the district, in appreciation that I want to attend to other issues of development both personal and public, in recognition that I will serve the district in not the distant future in any electable office, I hereby on this day, June 21, 2002, declare to step down from the position of chairperson of Kibaale district.â€Guidelines for the nominations say an aspiring candidate must be a registered voter and present in person, a signed and commissioned nomination paper containing form EC1 signed by two persons nominating him or her as a candidate.Other forms to be filled are those detailing the candidate’s qualifications, income, assets and liabilities. The candidates should also present a list of 50 names of registered voters from each of at least two thirds of all the electoral areas in the district, three post-card size photographs and a non-refundable fee of sh200,000 in cash or bank draft to the district administration. Non-resident candidates are to write pledging to set up residence within six months of election.Ends
