Uganda will receive a US$15.3m (sh.72.5b) grant from a US-based organisation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), to support the African youth Alliance (AYA) initiative.

By John Nzinjah Uganda will receive a US$15.3m (sh.72.5b) grant from a US-based organisation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), to support the African youth Alliance (AYA) initiative.The AYA country coordinator, Dr. Lorna Tumwebaze, disclosed this at a one-day workshop held at Kasese Catholic Diocese Social Hall on Monday.The workshop was to sensitise political and civil leaders about the AYA initiative.Tumwebaze said the money was Uganda’s share from the US$57m grant to four African countries to implement a five-year initiative to improve adolescent reproductive health and reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS.“Kasese has been selected to be one of the districts in Uganda to benefit from the grant,” Tumwebaze said.She said the other districts that would benefit in the first phase of the programme were Iganga, Kabale, Kabarole, Kampala, Kamwenge, Kapchorwa, Kyenjojo, Mayuge, Mbale, Sironko and Soroti.Tumwebaze said those that would benefit in the second phase were Apac, Kalangala, Kamuli, Kisoro, Kumi, Masindi and Pallisa. She said Tanzania, Ghana and Botswana would also implement the project. Ends
