By John Eremu THE Lango parliamentary group has condemned the recent rebel attacks on their area and called for strategic deployment of troops to prevent further incursions of the LRA in their territory. The group called on government to immediately give relief and emergency support to the victims of the attack and to set up a special fund for rehabilitating the institutions damaged during the attack. The LRA rebels, led by Joseph Kony (pictured), who have mainly been operating in Gulu and Kitgum districts, on Monday struck Iceme Catholic Mission in Apac, burning down three vehicles, a motorcycle and the communications house. They also looted the Mission and as the nearby Iceme Girls’ secondary school before they were repulsed by the UPDF.The same day, the rebels also raided Maaji refugee camp and an army detachment in Adjumani, killing five refugees and a UPDF soldier. They then looted drugs from the site dispensary before burning down the camp and the army detachment, the refugee agency - UNHCR - said in a statement. In a one-page statement yesterday the Lango Parliamentary group appealed for calm and co-operation with government in ending the 15-year old LRA insurgency.“We call upon the people of Lango to remain calm, continue to reject rebellion and co-operate with government to maintain security and peace,” the statement signed by the group’s vice chairman, Omara Atubo, the Otuke MP, said. The group headed by Dr. Okullo Epak (Oyam South) met at the Parliament on Tuesday and resolved to meet Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi.Ends
