THE admissions lists for this year’s admissions were finally released. This year, 4,000 students are assured of government sponsorship. What could have come as a disappointment to some students, is the fact that not all the 4,000 students are going to Makerere University. Of the 4,000, 2,795 will go to Makerere University, 1,000 to Kyambogo and the 205 will be spread out in Mbarara and Gulu universities.Makerere too has more work to do. Although the scenario for admissions improved this year, some students could not identify their names. There were cases of misspelt names. Still at the Ivory Tower, this year admissions will be more than last year, but, undergraduates should not fool around. Makerere University has passed stringent rules for the payment of tuition fees. The students who will not have paid 50% by the fifth week of every semester will not be considered university students and completion of all payments is expected by the tenth week. And what is becoming of our youths? God save Uganda. Police in Hoima district have arrested 10 students of St. More SSS in Kigorobya Town Council for attempting to burn school buildings during a strike staged last Wednesday. The police also impounded petrol in small bottles and firewood, which the errant students had planned to use during the strike. It is unfortunate that with all the sensitisation and effects of poor hygiene like the outbreak of cholera, have not had an impact even on the educated in our society. What else could explain the lack of toilet facilities in 76 primary schools in Soroti district? For lack of seriousness in these schools, the District Education Officer, Michael Etoyu is taking a stern measure of closing the schools. Hooray, Mr Etoyu, but headteachers of such schools should be penalised. Why should pupils go to the bushes to answer nature’s call? Till next week.Ends
