THE long awaited admissions lists at Makerere University finally came out last week. The good news is that as promised, government will sponsor 4,000 students up from 2,000. Of the 4,000 students, 2,795 will go to Makerere University, 1,000 to Kyambogo and the 205 to Mbarara and Gulu universities. All this is okay, but our universities are still lacking. There is need to improve the facilities to adequately cater for the students who are admitted. When students are admitted to other universities other than Makerere, they feel depressed. This scenario should not continue. We should have universities that students are proud of. This way, as students head for ‘A’ level, they will not view not going to Makerere as the end of the world. Makerere University is even contemplating admitting more private students next year. Where are the facilities? The staff at Makerere is over stretched. The lecturers handle too many classes, too many students. The sh15b collected from private students should be used to improve on motivation and recruitment of lecturers and improving facilities.Ends
