Kony Slips Into Sudan

By Dennis OjweeJOSEPH Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels, has crossed back into his hideouts in Imatong hills in southern Sudan with a force of about 200 fighters. Security sources in Kitgum district told The New vision yesterday that Kony is believed to have crossed from Kitgum into Sudan with many casualties the previous weekend.The UPDF 4th Division commander, Col. Andrew Gutti, yesterday said Kony fled back into his hideouts on Friday with about 200 LRA soldiers and some captives.He said Kony could not withstand the pressure exerted against him and his LRA group by UPDF forces in Pader and Kitgum districts.Kony crossed into Uganda about three weeks ago and was terrorised people in Kitgum and Pader districts, including massacring of 55 civilians in Mucwini sub-county in Kitgum on Wednesday. Gutti said Kony crossed through Teretenya, about 18 miles from Madi-Opei sub-county in Lamwo, Kitgum district.Security sources in Kitgum said Kony called his top field commanders, including his second in command, self-styled Brig. Vincent Otti, Tabuley, Lt. Col. Opira, and briefed them on their military strategies in Tim Pa Lukok in northern Kitgum district before he fled to Sudan.Ends
