By Joseph Kabuleta in Manchester Light welterweight Mohammed Kayongo became the second Ugandan to enter the semi-finals with a points win over Australia’s Jarrod Fletcher on Tuesday night. Kayongo had to dig deep to register a 25-22 points win in a very close contest that boosted Uganda’s medals tally. Up till then, Ugandan boxers had been knocking down everyone that stood in their way, but the Australian was a different preposition. His victory means that, regardless of the semi-final results, Uganda is sure of two medals. Kayongo joins light heavyweight Joseph Lubega at this stage. Uganda sent a team of four boxers to Manchester.Uganda’s medals hopes fell a medal short yesterday when flyweight Martin Mubiru failed his quarter-final test. Mubiru’s dreams of a medal ended with defeat at the hands of South Africa’s Nzimeni Msutu. The pint-sized Mubiru was very impressive in the preliminary stages with back-to-back knock-out victories. But the tormentor became the tormented yesterday with the sturdy South African landing twice as many punches as Mubiru. Although he forced two standing counts —— in the first round and fourth rounds —— the fact that Mubiru lasted the distance is testimony to his high endurance level. Boxing coach Dick Katende admitted that Msutu was the better fighter.Ends
