Faithful Drowns During Baptism

A student drowned in River Nile and five others were rescued as leaders of a religious sect, Rivers of Life Church, baptised them by immersion in the river on Sunday.

By Jonathan Angura A student drowned in River Nile and five others were rescued as leaders of a religious sect, Rivers of Life Church, baptised them by immersion in the river on Sunday.The incident happened at the river’s Kalagala Falls in Kangulumira in Kayunga district.The Police identified the dead student as Paul Wanume, 20, who was due to begin a course at Kayunga Technical School. Kayunga district Police chief, John Peter Omalinga, said the leader of the sect that operates in Ntooke, Kayunga town, Pastor Samuel Makayi, who led the baptism ceremony, fled after the incident. He said as the faithful were being dipped into the waters of the river, a rapid swept them off and Wanume drowned while five others managed to swim and were rescued.Eye-witnesses said there were over 100 converts awaiting baptism at the scene but they fled in disarray after the incident.
