SIR— I am glad to learn that the Uganda Museum is to have a face lift. Having worked in this institution for some time (December 1958 to March 1966), and as a museum specialist, I would like to contribute something for this important institution. What went wrong, I believe, started with the abolition of the museum’s status of being under a board of trustees, like the National Museum in Kenya. The museum today needs, not only big money, but also programmes which will appeal to the population. Art work alone will not do. Let there be more temporary exhibitions on topics like: the fight against modern diseases, protection of the environment, scientific exhibits, say on communication, the computer, internet, etc. as well as on modernmethods of agriculture, road transport, etc, which will attract the wananchi. What about decentralising the museums and training of the curators for these museums? All these need money.Patrick Y.
