THE World Bank has accepted the Government’s nomination of the Deputy Governor, Bank of Uganda, Dr. Louis Kasekende, to replace Richard Kaijuka at its headquarters in Washington DC.

“After the World Bank acceptance, Dr. Kasekende was asked to take up the new post effective September 16, 2002,” said a source.

“Kasekende, 44, who returned home from London early this week reports to his new World Bank offices in Washington DC on Monday,” said the source.

He confirmed the reports yesterday and said he was yet to get his appointment letter. He, however, said, “I’ve been told I am supposed to be there (Washington) between September 16 and 17.”

Kasekende, an economist, will now be the alternate executive director representing 23-English and Portuguese-speaking African countries.

He will hold the post till October 31, 2002 when he is expected to become full executive director.

Kaijuka was recalled following allegations that he received a US$10,000 bribe from a Norwegian company, Viedekke,

But Kaijuka, 58, denied the allegations, saying the money was paid to his son (Steven Kagyezi Kaijuka) for work he did for the Norwegian firm in 1999.

At the time Viedekke was lobbying for the Karuma Falls dam project.

The BOU Governor, Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, said yesterday the board would sit to appoint an acting deputy governor.

Both the governor and his deputy are presidential appointees. Each is recruited on a five-year contract. Mutebile, 53, was appointed BOU governor effective December 2000.
