OPERATION Wembley officers on Sunday arrested one of the most wanted robbery suspects who has been posing as a rebel of Herbert Itongwa’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Geoffrey Kamali writes that the suspect, only identified as Medi alias Bu-jean, was arrested from Mityana district after a tip-off from residents that he was recruiting youths to join ‘rebel ranks.’

His arrest is the first since a group of men claiming to be Itongwa rebels twice robbed travellers in Luweero last month.

The ‘rebels’ also burnt an omnibus, raided two Police stations and made off with three guns before issuing statements to the media, claiming responsibility for the attacks.

Soldiers claiming to be from the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) headquarters in Kampala raided the Mityana DISO (ISO’s) office where the suspect had been kept and whisked him away.

Sources said yesterday the ISO men claimed they had orders to take away the suspect. His whereabouts were still unclear by last evening.

Operation Wembley commander Col. Elly Kayanja, who travelled to the scene, confirmed his suspect had been taken away but declined to comment further.
