RESIDENTS of Walukuba Housing estate in Jinja municipality have been called upon to dig channels around their premises to guard against their houses being swept away by the El-Nino rains.
The Walukuba-Masese LC3 chairman, Philip Bwambale, recently said the channels would help carry away water which could otherwise enter and sweep away houses in the estate.
He has also given the tenants up to the end of this month to renew their tenancy agreements or lose their houses which will be allocated to other interested persons.
Bwambale was addressing a congregation at All Saints Church Walukuba, during makungula (harvest day) celebrations that were presided over by Jinja mayor David Wakudumira.
“Please dig channels around your houses to guard against the water from the expected El-Nino rains, otherwise you may be asleep and find yourselves and your families being carried away by the water,†Bwambale said.
Walukuba estate, which has houses that are over 50 years old, accommodates over 15,000 people in its 1,500 housing units.
Jinja municipal council has decided to sell it off to interested individuals giving priority to the sitting tenants.
Wakudumira thanked residents who responded to the council’s call to renovate and paint their premises and appealed to those who were defiant to comply or their premises would be closed. Ends
