THE KCC-Villa league derby has a long and intriguing history.
As always the battle is on and off the pitch. Off the pitch, debates over which team has the best tactics, managers, league record and most loyal fans, take centre stage.
It is usually pride and more at stake when the ‘yellow’ of Kampala City Council (KCC) comes up against the ‘blue’ of SC Villa.
When the two Kampala giants battle today, it will be a tie unlikely to match the thrills that the derby has produced in the last 18 years. This is partly due to Villa’s superior position.
Villa fans will recall with relish the Jogoos’ 5-0 hammering of the Kasasiro lads in Masaka in 1992, while actually, the last time KCC put up a decisive league fight, was in their 2-0 win on their way to overall victory in 1997.
KCC needed a win to clinch the 1997 title and got it through late strikes by Jackson Mayanja and Abdalla Mubiru.
That was the last time KCC tested league glory, and will have to wait another year as they are well off the pace.
The only consolation is that Sam Ssimbwa, part of the 1990 Cup winning team, is bringing back the winning mentality.
