PROF John Ssebuwufu, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, will preside over the 42 convocation a role which has hitherto been performed by heads of state, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwe.

The development is a result of the New Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 that states that head of state would no longer be the chancellor of a public university.

The ceremony is set for October 1I at the university’s Freedom Square. President Museveni may attend the ceremony in the capacity of a visitor. A chancellor is yet to be appointed. The chancellor must be approved by the university council, according to the act.

Makerere University’s public relations officer Hellen Kaweesa said unless a chancellor is appointed, the Vice Chancellor will preside over the ceremony.

The council has been enacted barely two weeks to the ceremony.

The university has no chancellor and the post of vice chancellor falls vacant this month when Ssebuwufu’s contract expires.
