TWO men on Friday narrowly escaped death when their lorry slipped off a temporary bridge and plunged into River Manafwa in Manjiya, Mbale district.
Manjiya MP David Wakikona told The New Vision over the weekend that a lorry carrying molasses to Bulucheke failed to cross the temporary structure built over the river after the 1997/8 El Nino disaster.
Wakikona said soon after that El Nino President Yoweri Museveni visited Bulucheke with former MP Sam Muyonga and promised that a proper bridge would be constructed over the river, but that the construction had delayed due to many reasons.
He said one of the reasons is that the Ministry of Works team has been waiting for this year’s El Nino rains to pass so that a longer lasting concrete basement for the bridge can be set.
Wakikona told The New Vision that the lorry had blocked the road from Mbale to Bulucheke, effectively cutting off the banana, coffee, and timber rich sub-counties from the rest of the country. Ends
