Three tragedies are coinciding to make Kampala city residents pay higher prices for water in future.
National Water and Sewerage Corporation officials (NWSC) said the Inner Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria, from where they pump potable water for the city, is becoming increasingly polluted.
Consequently the cost of water treatment is going up and water charges follow suit, said NWSC chief William Muhairwe (pictured above).
They blame it on poor planning of the Nakivubo channel that drains the city, the greed of rich and poor people who have encroached on the Nakivubo wetland, and failure of city authorities to protect the wetland.
The Nakivubo wetland, located between Bugolobi and Namuwongo suburbs, has been severely encroached upon under the noses of city law enforcers.
Houses and crops have replaced most of the natural vegetation that otherwise would filter the waste before it flows into Lake Victoria.
The Nakivubo channel, now being expanded with World Bank funding, has been designed in such a way that much of the waste water bypasses the swamp that would filter it.
“We are now flushing the whole city into the lake,†said an official.
