LEADING coaches Micho Sredojevich and Mike Mutebi have expressed their reservations on the change of the Nile Special Super League (NSSL) calendar.
The National Football League Committee (NFLC) resolved to change the league format this year as Uganda moves towards a global football calendar. The league kicks off on November 21.
The 2002 season ends this month and the 2003 season will run from November this year to mid next year as opposed to starting in February 2003.
The Villa coach, who is set to study a younger crop of players in the break from whom he will get new recruits, is furious with the league committee. “It has been a long season and my players really need a rest.
“One month is so short but we have no alternative but to accept the changes,” the tactician said.
Simba coach Mike Mutebi complements the initiative, which he terms ‘a good idea’ but does not agree with the timing and planning strategy.
“The players are not machines and the minimal rest period is supposed to be six weeks. With a little bit of more planning, this change would have been the fine,” said German-trained Mutebi.
Mutebi believes the Castle, Bika and Kakungulu Cups on top of national team engagements, will serve as inevitable flaws and consequently undermine the new season.
The new arrangement is also aimed at ensuring Ugandan clubs have picked up form in time for the CECAFA club championships and continental engagements.
Uganda’s flag bearers normally start competing in Africa’s premier soccer competitions before the start of the local league thus being disadvantaged.
