FORMER world champion Marcus Gronholm has no regrets about the exclusion of the Kenya Safari rally from the World Rally Championship calendar.
“I have never finished the Safari, so I don’t mind,” World Championship leader Gronholm said.
Other leading World Championship rally figures have expressed regret.
“The Safari has changed a lot in the last few years. last year we complained it was like European speed, but more dangerous. Personally, I feel a bit sad,” Ford driver and former winner Carlos Sainz said.
“I think it’s a classic event,” Prodrive Subaru Sporting Director George Donaldson said. “I think the World Championship is about more than the drivers going fast down a short stage. We are losing a continent. That hurts. We’re becoming more and more a European championship. I would hope that the Safari could either sort itself out or [we find] another rally in Africa.”
THE motor sport fraternity will be treated to a full show of cars and motorcycle races in the Independence motor cross Championship at Garuga double track circuit on Sunday.
Sixteen drivers have confirmed participation in the curtain raiser sprint.
Upcoming drivers Ismail Lule (Subaru), Wycliff Bukenya (Toyota Celica ST 185), Arthur Blick (Toyota Supra), Ponsiano Lwakataka (Subaru) and William Blick in a Mitsubishi Evolution head the entry list. Ends
