The Truth Is, Quarry Blasts In Muyenga Are A Hazard!

SIR— I refer to the story carried in The New Vision of September 21 on page 2 captioned. “Muyenga Quarry Ban Lifted.” The city secretary for health, hygiene and environmental protection, Anthony Francis Lubowa, is quoted as having lifted the ban on rock extraction at Muyenga Quarry after meeting the owners of
the quarry.
I hope that the story is incorrect. Otherwise, as a property owner and a resident of Muyenga, I protest the decision. KCC should have solicited for testimonies from residents and property owners at a public hearing. We cannot stand the damage caused to our properties by the blasts and flying stones as well as the inconvenience regularly suffered whenever roads have to be closed for about 45 minutes each time blasting has to be done. Blasting normally occurs three times every week! Further, there are numerous dangers posed to the residents by the water pools that form in the craters whenever it rains. In addition, patients with heart problems, high blood pressure and related health problems are at risk from the noise of the blasts. The dust generated by the stone mills poses a health risk. We inhale tens of grammes of dust every day. It is evident that we shall have respiratory-related problems. The milling machines make cranking noise every day, all day. Given these hazards, it is unacceptable for KCC to lift the ban without consulting residents whom it allowed to build houses. We shall sue for placing our properties and lives at peril. NEMA!
