IF you thought the problem of garbage collection in Kampala would soon come to an end, you were wrong.
Kitezi dumping site in Nangabo sub-county, Wakiso district, where all the city’s refuse is disposed off is full.
The over 20-acre piece of land can no longer contain the amount of garbage produced in Kampala.
“Production of garbage in Kampala is too high. Our dumping site in Kitezi is getting full.
We are looking for another site,” the city secretary for health, hygiene and environment, Anthony Francis Lubowa, said recently.
Whereas KCC is in the process of privatising garbage collection in the city, Lubowa told The New Vision that a new dumping site is needed.
Lubowa said refuse dumped at Kitezi had always been separated according to its nature but the site was still not enough.
KCC wants to get a dumping site located in the city but none has been found yet.
Lubowa said KCC spent over sh9m on garbage collection.
“We would wish to get a site that is nearer than the one in Kitezi because we spend a lot of money on fuel,” he said.
The refuse collection trucks are also in bad mechanical condition.
The trucks keep breaking down when transporting garbage from various locations in the city to Kitezi.
He added that in addition to the mechanical problems were very few.
He said privatisation of garbage collection would kick off when Kampala is divided into garbage collection zones.
