REMNANTS of the Allied Democratic Front rebels have resorted to casual labour in the Congo following the cut-off of all supplies.
“Everyone who survived the wrath is on his own. We had resorted to casual labour to forge a living,†a former rebel field commander, Mutwalibu Mukongo, who gave up rebellion, told The New Vision on Tuesday.
He said most remnants were digging in Rubero villages and in the suburbs of Butembo and Bunia towns in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
At least 300,000 people were left displaced by the war in Kasese and Bundibugyo districts.
Mukongo said the rebel army chief, Yusuf Jojo Kabanda is with his Nandi cousins in Butembo but unable to re-organise the fighters.
“Many including Kabanda are looking for a safe passage to re-join their families in Uganda,†he said.
He said some fighters have been in the bush for over seven years and were fed up with the situation there.
The UPDF second division commander, Col. Poteli Kivuna, said the amnesty the Government gave the rebels still stands and all those wishing to surrender were free to do so.
ADF rebels invaded Uganda from the Congo through Kasese and Bundibugyo in 1996 but were defeated.
