Winnie should avoid discrediting herself! Why back-track every so often?

SIR— The Mbarara Municipality MP, Winnie Byanyima has written a letter expressing disappointment (New Vision of October 7) at the way Mr Alfred Wasike covered the handover of her husband’s military equipment to the Police. However, since Wasike was present at the scene, there is no reason why we should doubt his report as an eye witness of the events that took place on the scene. That is why he is professionally referred to as a reporter — because he saw/heard what transpired between MP Byanyima and the Jinja Road Police commander, Pius Mutabazi. I for one believe she uttered those words — that she had fond memories with her husband under that tent. Surely, the DPC and other journalists and other people who were present in her compound must have heard her request to the police for that tent and could corroborate the facts. How come that she did not refute the bit about how James Opoka was not with the LRA? We have a high regard for Winnie’s resilience on just
causes. However, I propose that she avoids discrediting herself by back-tracking on her
statements whenever they
produce a backlash she may not have intended at the time she makes them.
