When Operation Wembley agents raided a suspected robbers’ haven at Mbubi zone, Lungujja in Rubaga, a Kampala suburb on Saturday, they were surprised to find handcuffs among other items recovered, writes Geoffrey Kamali.
Handcuffs had previously been a reserve of the Police. Two guns were also recovered at the scene, a house rented by Mike Sserunjogi alias Mukiibi Ssebuliba.
David Magara, the acting operational commander, who is also the deputy regional Police commander, Kampala Extra, said two of the gunmen were shot dead in a fire exchange. The bodies were taken to the city mortuary.
Sserunjogi, however, managed to escape as well as several others.
Magara said three of the suspects were arrested.
Other items recovered were three loaded magazines with 91 bullets, 17 pistols, a blue number plate, UAA 038H, allocated to an NGO and four pairs of handcuffs.
The gangsters had also filed several Bukedde newspapers containing several stories about city robberies. Bukedde is a sister paper to The New Vision.
Wembley sources said they were scrutinising several telephone lists which were seized from the suspects.
The lists are thought to contain potential victims.
“We do not know what these people were using the handcuffs for,” Magara said. Ends
