THERE will be no Uganda Open for the second year running.
Uganda Tennis Association (UTA) general secretary Fred Luzinda told The New Vision yesterday that Uganda’s premier tennis tournament had been cancelled.
The tournament that was scheduled for next month was called-off after a change of heart by would-be sponsors Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL).
Instead UBL has committed itself to funding the competition next year.
“We cannot start looking for another sponsor now, they (UBL) should have informed us earlier.
“Even if we get another sponsor it would be difficult to organise the tournament this year because we will be focusing on the ITF Under-18 tournament in Kampala in December,” Luzinda said.
Luzinda said UTA was considering seeking an alternative sponsor for the Uganda Open.
Kenyans Norbert Oduor and Esther Mbugua won the last edition of the Uganda Open tournament at Lugogo, Kampala in 2000.
