THE different officials’ beaming faces, which were enjoying live music in the warm Indian Ocean breeze at the Coco Beach said it all. Another successful tournament had just ended and it was the time to celebrate. It was a great climax to end six days of the third edition of the East African Castle Lager Cup football tournament In Arusha and Dar es Salaam. It ended with the final between Uganda and Kenya at the National stadium in Dar es Salaam. The three East African teams Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania with this year’s guest team South Africa’s Bafana Bafana battled it out in the tournament aimed at promoting East African soccer amidst the cheering fans. Kenya, who were playing in the final for the third consecutive time, won the cup after shooting out Uganda from the trophy and sh25.8m winners’ prize. Uganda got a consolation prize of sh20.7m while South Africa and Tanzania each walked off with sh17.2m and sh13.8m respectively. And the numerous fans, who spent their time not only to cheer on the winners but also enjoy the good football exhibited by the four countries were pleased to have been blessed by the tournament. Hosts Tanzania, though unlucky, put up some of their greatest games, thanks to coach James Sianga’a. But they have to find a way of turning the numerous created chances into goals. “It has been great football all throughout. The tournament has been nice and the football spirit has said it all,†said Global Africa Football’s Sue Destombes after the tournament. South Africa coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba complimented her efforts. “The tournament was a success. It has really performed its work of developing football and we need many of such tournaments if we are to successful develop football in Africa. It is on the right track,†he said. Castle Lager, through their organisers Global Africa airlifted, accommodated, dressed and paid all the players and officials’ allowance. They also gave cash prizes based on excellence to help the invited nations improve competition and indeed, a step was being taken.
