The Commonwealth Secretariat has recognised three Uganda women for transforming small businesses into successful enterprises.

The Commonwealth Secretariat has recognised three Uganda women for transforming small businesses into successful enterprises.
They include Alice Karugaba of Nina Interiors, Mary Kisitu of Lakai Uniforms and Kiwa Industries and Shahina Jaffer of MAKKS Packaging Industries.
They have been profiled in a book that gives 30 success stories of business women in the Commonwealth countries who have made success in trade.
The 192-page book says that Nina Interiors started with capital of US$ 60 to open up a grocery in 1988 and in the year 2000 they saw an annual turnover of sh 1bn.
Lakai Uniforms incorporated in 1981 owns 50% of Kiwa Industries and has realised sales volume of sh300m in the year 2001.
MAAKSS Packaging Industries was registered in 1995 and had a turnover of US$4m in the year 2001 and was nominated investor of the year in 2000 by the Uganda Investment Authority(UIA).
The book published by the Commonwealth Secretariat in the UK is on the theme ‘Commonwealth Businesswomen, Trade Matters, Best Practices and Success Stories’ and provides an overview of globalisation and trade liberalisation including their gender impact.
It gives the background information on trade issues and gives an insight into mandates of groups like the World Trade Organisation(WTO).
