THE trial of Winnie Byanyima on charges of illegal possession of a gun flopped on Thursday. It was reported that she and her lawyer had to appear before the Constitutional Court to present their petition against the Political Organisations Act (POA).
Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Frank Othembi postponed the case to enable Byanyima and her lawyer Erias Lukwago attend the petition proceedings.
Byanyima (pictured right), who is the MP for Mbarara municipality, is in the process of defending herself against charges of illegal possession of a firearm and seven rounds of ammunition.
The key defence witnesses is exiled Rtd. Major Okwir Rabwoni who Byanyima said is the owner of the gun.
Another witness is her sister Edith Byanyima.
The case has lasted over a year now. She was charged in September last year after the said fire-arm and ammunition were found at her home in Luzira, a Kampala suburb. Byanyima is one of petitioners led by Democratic Party Chief Paul Ssemmogerere who want the POA declared unconstitutional on grounds that it restricts parties from organising. Ends
