MANY dogs have a reputation of barking without biting, but yesterday, an international training and breeding centre for security, anti-crime and explosives sniffer-dogs opened here to breed dogs, writes Richard Komakech. The four-month-old Armour Group K9 dog centre established by the Armour Group, a private security firm, is the second of its kind in Africa after one in South Africa owned by the Police Force there.
“Here, we are training dogs in obedience, obstacle courses and specialised exercises in protection,†Lee Smith, the General Manager of Armour Group, said.
The 22 dogs at the centre were imported at US$10,000 each from Germany, Holland and South Africa. They include German shepherds, Belgian shepherds, Boer Collins and Rat violets and 14 puppies of the different species.
“We are training and breeding specific species because not all dogs can withstand or adapt to the rigorous training,†Kitty Marais, the centre head, herself former dog trainer in the South African Police force, said.
