SIR— We wish to set the record straight about two letters that appeared in The New Vision of 22nd October and 24th October regarding Dr David Kihumuro Apuuli’s alleged statement that “time is wasted” on treatment of people with HIV/AIDS and funerals of those who die of AIDS.

While addressing university deans and student leaders at Hotel Africana in Kampala recently, the Director-General of the Uganda AIDS Commission, Dr Kihumuro Apuuli, discussed the impact of HIV/AIDS on various sectors, specifically on poverty alleviation. He said scarce resources are inevitably spent on people with HIV/AIDS.

School fees, for instance, are diverted into meeting hospital bills; relatives have to be away from work to nurse the patient.

The authors of the letters missed Dr Kihumuro’s point. He never said “time is wasted”. He has long experience in health matters as a former director-general of health services in Uganda before joining the commission in the same capacity. He has lost close relatives to AIDS and is looking after the orphans. He can’t have uttered that insensitive remark.
