THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Commissioner General, Aslund Annebritt, will not wait for the Ssebutinde commission’s report before she strikes at suspected corrupt officials.

On Monday, she directed deputy commissioner for finance Joash Muhumuza and assistant commissioner Kalyebi Magola, Alice Nyangoma and Mubendi both of the finance department, to leave office to pave way for investigations into alleged financial impropriety.

The four received the letters directing them to stay away from their offices yesterday.

The decision was communicated to the management meeting yesterday morning.

“They have been advised to be out of office temporarily,” said the URA commissioner for tax education and public relations, Christopher Kiwanuka Kaweesa. He said the four officers had been advised to stay out of office for three days.

Asked if the suspension followed preliminary findings of the Ssebutinde probe commission, Kaweesa said, “It could lead to that.”

He declined to comment further. The commission of inquiry into corruption in the URA quizzed Muhumuza over laxity in the management of finances.

The commission found out that the finance department was not strict in the manner they handled imprest and advances.

The inquiry particularly focussed on the Nakawa headquarters project involving the construction of a security fence and other fences at the border posts where about sh15m could not be accounted for.

He was also quizzed for facilitating the sale of an old car he once owned, to the Special Revenue Protection Services (SRPS).

The commission found out that Muhumuza imported a Levin motor vehicle, which he sold to an advocate in the city, where he eventually directed the SRPS personnel to find the car.

The probe, which winds up soon, has urged the public to give information that could expose corruption in the URA.
