By Ricks Kayizzi UGANDA Revenue Authority (URA) has introduced a new tax verification system, ASYCUDA ++, which is also expected to ease the tracking of goods in transit. The new system became functional on November 1st and is being introduced with changes in, among other things, the structure of Customs Procedure Codes. “This has been done in order to bring our system in line with international standards, now that we are embarking on regional economic integration,†Paulinus Tiryomwe the URA assistant ASYCUDA project manager. This was during a workshop organized by the Uganda Freight Forwarders Association. (UFFA) to educate clearing agents about the new system, at the Grand Imperial Hotel, Oct. 25. He said that the new system has been first installed at the Kampala Long Room, after which it will be spread to Malaba and Entebbe, then to all URA offices countrywide. Tiryomwe said that the system will handle all documents regarding import duties, customs clearance and verification and general clearance process, which was making goods clearance a long and complicated process. “With this system in place, we will be automatically linked to countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Rwanda, which are using the same system. We will also be able to track down goods in transit anywhere in these countries,†he said. Bent Andersen, the UFFA chairman, said that the new system will most likely cut down on incidents of corruption, since there will be minimal contact between officials and traders. Ends
