PARLIAMENT yesterday passed a motion urging the Government to stop evictions of occupants until the 1998 Land Act is fully operational.
The motion moved by Ssebuliba Mutumba (Kawempe South), also urged the Government to implement the Land Act which protects bonafide occupants or bibanja holders against evictions.
Mutumba moved the motion as a matter of national importance which requires Parliament to defer scheduled matters.
State for lands minister Baguma Isoke said the Police had instructions to verify the authenticity of court eviction orders. He said LC courts would hear land cases until the tribunals were established.
Several MPs said powerful people evicted the poor in disregard of the law. Mutumba said a 72-year-old man in his constituency was recently evicted.
