HE was released from prison on treason charges but was immediately re-arrested at the Buganda Road Court premises.

Frank Byaruhanga, a senior campaign researcher for Col. Kizza Besigye during the 2001 presidential elections, had been released at a cash bail of sh500,000 by the chief magistrate, Frank Nigel Othembi.

But the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) officials re-arrested him on Friday before he stepped out of the court premises and took him to Kiira road police station.

Byaruhanga, 46, was yesterday produced in court and committed to the High Court to answer charges of treason and misprision of treason.

Buganda Road Court Magistrate Charles Serubuga stopped the accused’s lawyer, Ronald Oine, from making a fresh application for his release.

Serubuga said he had instructions from the chief magistrate to commit Byaruhanga to the High Court.

In an indictment to court dated November 22, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) said he would adduce evidence to show that soon after the last presidential elections, some members of Besigye’s camp held a meeting and decided to wage war against Uganda.

The DPP added that the accused person willingly joined the group.
