KAMPALA town clerk Gordon Mwesigye has flown to South Africa on official duties despite a resolution passed by the district council on Friday to suspend him.

Mayor John Ssebaana Kizito said yesterday that Mwesigye flew out on Saturday and would be away for one week.

“Mwesigye is still the town clerk. He flew out to represent the city in South Africa on Saturday. He will be away for about a week,” Ssebaana Kizito said.

Over the weekend, the mayor told Bukedde that he would not implement the council’s directive because of the flawed procedures.
He said the Speaker was free to convene another session to pass a proper resolution.

The motion to suspend Mwesigye was moved by Kampala district youth representative to the council, Henry Lubowa and seconded by Kyambogo Institutions councillor, Ronald Balimwezo.

The council’s decision was meant to pave way for investigations into the bungling of tenders for the management of Nakasero and St. Balikuddembe (Owino) markets.

The Speaker, Sarah Ssebaggala, neither called Mwesigye to defend himself nor put the matter to vote.

Local government minister Jaberi Bidandi Ssali said he did not expect Ssebaana to suspend Mwesigye because the motion was not properly tabled or passed.

Meanwhile, Japan has given Uganda a US$3m grant to rebuild Wakaligga Road, which runs from Bakuli to Nateete roundabout.

The Japanese Charge D’Affairs, Tatsuya Miki and Uganda’s Minister of Finance, Gerald Ssendaula, yesterday signed the agreement for the funds which will also be used to reseal Ggaba road.

The work is expected to start in April next year. It will take nine months to complete.

Ssendaula amused the audience during the signing when he said the grant would save the area MP, Ken Lukyamuzi, from going on a hunger strike.

“Whenever he (Lukyamuzi) gets a rumour that something is going to happen, he declares he is going on a hunger strike to give the impression that he is the one who has pushed for it,” Ssendaula said.
