By Kenneth Otim in Soroti THE Uganda Prisons force is to recruit 500 prison warders in the country to beef up its operations. The assistant commissioner for prisons and director of training and operations, Moses Wagabaza Kakungulu, has said. Kakungulu told The New Vision that the prison department was understaffed to manage the big number of prisoners. “We are understaffed and working at a ratio of 1:8 yet the situation is supposed to be 1:3,†he said. “We are training 500 as our first batch but more training will be done in subsequent phases,†he said. Kakungulu said the training would start in January next year when funds are released by the ministry of finance. Over 473 people sat for the prison oral and written interviews in Soroti, Katakwi and Moroto districts. Those to be recruited should be aged between 20-25 years with ‘O’ level certificates and a pass in the English language. Kakungulu said principal prison waders would be recruited in January if the Ministry of Finance releases the funds. Ends
