A Total of 3,250 Congolese of Hema and Alur tribes have crossed into Nebbi district following fresh clashes between the two tribes and the Lendu in Athanga, Jalosiga, 50 kilometres inside DR Congo.
Nebbi district security officer Emmanuel Adui said most of the refugees were staying in church premises and with relatives in the parishes of Jupamato, Lendu and Ayaka in western Zeu and Jang-Okoro sub-counties.
“The Congolese are peaceful so there is no security threat to our people. They are only desperate to get food, shelter and medicine,†he said.
Adui said his office and that of the resident district commissioner had informed UNHCR.
He said most of the Congolese don’t want to stay in camps but would rather stay around the border to monitor the security situations in the Congo.
Adui said the district security officials met with the traditional chiefs to discuss possible ways of stopping the tribal clashes.
