CHIEF Justice Benjamin Odoki has encouraged specialisation as a requirement for success in the legal profession.

Odoki, who enrolled new advocates at the High Court in Kampala on Friday, said, “With increased numbers in the legal profession, there is need to encourage specialisation.”

At least 64 out of 65 advocates including one of Asian descent were called to the Bar.

Odoki said a Ugandan lawyer must be like the proverbial Jack of all trades and master of none.

“My personal view is that we should encourage specialisation, say in the criminal law, family law, business transactions....etc,” he said.

He said the Judiciary had established the Commercial Court, which deals with cases of commercial nature.

Odoki said they were yet to fully operationalise the Family Division, the Civil and the Criminal Divisions.

He urged the lawyers to update their knowledge and skills. Odoki encouraged the lawyers to sacrifice, so that they give professional services free or at a minimal cost through legal aid schemes.

He Encouraged lawyers to represent criminal suspects on behalf of Government when called upon.
