UGANDA will this week launch a massive campaign against the estimated 1.2 million child labourers in the country.
Moses Wambwa, the programme officer for African Network for Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN), said the multimedia campaign was part of the global war aimed at the elimination of child labour.
ANPPCAN board member Anthony Emiru said gender, labour and social development minister Zoe Bakoko Bakoru would launch the campaign.
Wambwa, while closing a media workshop for journalists on Friday said ANPPCAN was working with the gender ministry for legislation against the employment of children.
“I hope the legislation will be in place next year so that we can prosecute those employing children,” he said.
Emiru said the employment of children affected their development and fuelled poverty.
He said such children were denied opportunities like education and were not brought up well psychologically. Ends
