THE chairman of the parliamentary committee on national economy, currently under probe over allegations of taking bribes, yesterday denied receiving a box of soap as an inducement from Mukwano Group of Companies.

Nathan Nandala Mafabi (Budadiri West), in his testimony led by his counsel Peter Walubiri, dismissed the allegations as madness.

He said the only thing he ever had from Mukwano was a bottle of mineral water, which he drank on his visit there.

The rules, privileges and discipline committee chaired by Ben Wacha is investigating Mafabi and Capt. David Guma Gumisiriza (Ibanda North) over holding irregular meetings and harassing Mukwano employees with intent to extort money.

The Mukwano Group of Companies managing director, Alikhan Karmali, sat quietly over the proceedings. His legal counsels are Christopher Bwanika and Oscar Kambona, all Kampala lawyers.

Mafabi said there was nothing irregular with the meetings he and Guma held with Mukwano. He said all the meetings were initiated by Karmali.

He admitted that he visited Mukwano industries a number of times on the invitation of the Mukwano management, and on a number of occasions met Karmali, the public relations officer Dr. David Mulasanyi and the financial manager one Vankett.
