THE state minister for tourism, Jovino Akaki, has said a bill to protect consumers is now ready and will soon be tabled in Parliament.

Akaki said on Friday during the official opening of a regional consumer and civil society workshop at the City Regency Hotel, that all other commercial laws are being revised to redress problems such as dumping and other unfair trading practices affecting the Ugandan economy.

He said the problems have had a negative impact on the economy for some time, and there was urgent need to redress the situation.

“Problems of dumping and of counterfeit products, violation of intellectual property rights, unfair competitive practices and discharge of inferior financial, transport, catering and other services, have impacted negatively on the economy,” said Akaki.

“They have affected the consumer, then the local industry in form of unfair competition, and they have definitely scared away some investment,” he added.

He said the Government would continue to incorporate consumer and civil rights advocates in regional and international trade negotiations.
