THE Christmas mood has gripped Jinja town in eastern Uganda, as shown by a sharp increase in sales for most categories of goods.
Dealers in secondhand shoes said they had experienced the busiest time beginning last Monday.
“We are registering average sales. In fact most of our customers are buying shoes for children, women and the youth. However we expected a lot of sales this season, but people seem not to have money. But business is relative,” Fred Kakaire a second hand shoe dealer in Napier market said on Friday.
A number of shopkeepers whose shops specialise in cosmetics also told The New Vision that their sales had sharply shot up since early December.
“We have to ensure that we stock cosmetics and salon products early enough so that when the peak time comes, we do not disappoint our customers. You know women want to work on their skins to look beautiful so we always bring the best for them,” a woman shopkeeper along Scindia Road said.
Commercial banks in Jinja town were also jammed with customers, withdrawing money to spend during the festive season.
Christmas decorations and various foodstuffs , especially favoured by children being sold in the central market, are also in high demand. Ends
