Volcano Victims Get Food

THE United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Kampala regional office yesterday dispatched 640 metric tonnes of assorted foodstuffs to the Democratic Republic of Congo people displaced by a volcanic eruption.

Sources said WFP had invited applications for tenders to supplement a fleet of trucks for the emergency operation.Mrs. Judith Lewis, the WFP director for East and Southern Africa, yesterday told The New Vision that they had set aside US$18m (about sh31.5b) to provide emergency relief food to the victims of the volcanic eruption. Relief food items included maize, cooking oil, soya and peas.“At the moment, we are looking at providing emergency relief food for three months. After that, we shall have an extended recovery period basing on how the situation will be,” Lewis said.She said they had stocked enough food to cover the three-month period.Ends
