Mbarara Security Tightened

Security has been stepped up at the High Court in Mbarara following clashes between supporters of Mbarara Municipality MP Winnie Byanyima and those of former parliamentary candidate Ngoma Ngime.

By Allan TuryagumaSecurity has been stepped up at the High Court in Mbarara following clashes between supporters of Mbarara Municipality MP Winnie Byanyima and those of former parliamentary candidate Ngoma Ngime.The court presided over by Justice Vincent Kagaba is hearing the election petition which Ngime filed against Byanyima, claiming that she used fraudulent means to beat him in the 2001 elections.The Regional Police Commander, Edward Ochom, told The New Vision on Wednesday that both uniformed and plaincloth Police officers had been deployed at the court to check further violence.Ochom said he had ordered his officers with metal detectors to check everybody entering the court, saying some people went there with firearms.Ends
