THE East African Legislative Assembly regional affairs and conflict resolution standing committee is to study and collect views on the proposed establishment of the East African federation.Richard Mutumba reports that the assembly Speaker, Abdulrahman Kinana, made the announcement to the House yesterday. Kinana gave the committee up to June to hand in their report.The motion to have the matter referred to the House committee was moved by Maj. General Mugisha Muntu (Uganda). Muntu is a member of the committee. Members of the assembly have been pushing for a political federation, a move also backed by President Yoweri Museveni.Museveni told the assembly on Monday that he saw no problem with a political federation before the customs union, common market and monetary union intended to consolidate the cooperation of the three states.Foreign minister James Wapakhabulo said, “We need to start discussing the issue of integration because even the question of the different political ideologies will disappear.”Ends
