SC Villa went down 2-1 to Sudan’s Al-Merreikh in the Champions League while KCC fell 1-0 to St.George in the CAF Cup yesterday.KCC can take heart from their away performance that saw them concede a single goal against fancied St. George in Addis Ababa yesterday. The home side’s lone goal came late in the 80th minute through Girna Feyera to send 30,000 spectators cheering.A last-minute goal from Villa’s Said Abed could have a crucial bearing on the return tie at Mandela stadium, Namboole in two weeks time. Al Merreikh struck through Ahmed el-Seyyed and Haitham el-Rashid in the 62nd and 79th minutes. Villa assistant coach Moses Basena said Maurice Sunguti and Abed wasted several scoring chances. “We are coming back(Wednesday) to prepare for them and I think we can overcome the results,” Basena said. Villa remain Uganda’s most successful team on the continent, having reached both the African Club and CAF Cup finals before.r Simba of Tanzania had two players sent off as they crashed 4-0 at Nkana of Zambia in an African Champions League first round clash. Argumentative Mohamed Mwameja was shown a red card after being cautioned twice in the central mining town of Kitwe and Ramadhan Ramadhan got his marching orders for a vicious tackle. Fresh from winning the East and Central Africa championship on the island of Zanzibar, expectations were high in Tanzania. Zamalek of Egypt, champions a record four times, were even more convincing victors, thrashing Patriotic Army of Rwanda 6-0 in Cairo with veteran striker Hossam Hassan opening the scoring after just two minutes. Orlando Pirates, the sole South African winners of the 38-year competition, could win only 2-1 at home to Saint Louisienne from the French-governed Indian Ocean island of Reunion. Esperance of Tunisia, runners-up twice in the previous three editions, trounced Chadian visitors Tourbillon 5-1.
