By Okello JabweliTANZANIAN President Benjamin Mkapa arrives today to open a three-day symposium on the future of the Great Lakes region. The Kampala symposium under the theme, “Reinforcing the region’s Solidarity by Setting a Regional Agenda for a Culture of Peace, Unity and People-Centred Development,” is to chart out a collective vision to deal with the problems of the region. President Yoweri Museveni will deliver a keynote address at the conference organised by the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation. The Foundation, a Tanzanian-based non-governmental organisation, was founded to work with the African people to realise the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s vision of peace, unity and people-centred development. Over 200 delegates including regional heads of state, MPs, academics, religious leaders, the private sector and the military are expected to attend the symposium on the region’s future.
